Haul Seining is (or was) a community-defining commercial fishing technique that relied on deep local knowledge of tides and migrations and was used for centuries on the East End. My great uncle Milton Miller, a main character in Peter Matthiessen's Men's Lives, an environmental advocate, founder and president of the Baymen's Association, defended haul seining when the state banned it in 1990.
