What started as the Jungle Inn in 1934 became Jungle Petes in the 1940's. A legendary, unpretentious watering hole where baymen and art icons like Jackson Pollock and Willem DeKooning all imbibed together. Pollock used to call my grandfather, the chief of police, in the 60's to come pick him up from Jungle Petes and drive him home. One time, my grandfather walked straight across one of his wet canvases on the floor, leaving footprints that are rumored to be visible on one of his paintings. Pop said, 'it looked like a drop cloth' and after Pollock offered him a painting for all his designated driving, Pop replied, 'I wouldn't hang that sh*t in my bathroom'. Oh pop. We loved you dearly, but this one was a mistake.
